13.45 - 14.30
Immersion and narratives are growing focuses within the escape room industry. They help players feel more absorbed and convinced by the themes designers aim to create. Marise and David focus heavily on these elements when building their games and puzzles. In this presentation, they will share their ideas of how to create convincing worlds, using examples from their own hand-made and bespoke builds.
About Marise and David
Marise Watson and David Vella are co-owners of The Cipher Room in Sydney, Australia. Their current focus is on immersive and vintage environments, using bespoke and handmade puzzles and builds. They create most parts of their games themselves – including concepts, narratives, puzzles (electronic/mechanical/graphic/etc), set design, sound effects, lighting, etc.
They’ve enjoyed collaborating on other projects including the large scale, immersive Sydney theatrical event, ‘A Midnight Visit’. In 2018, The Cipher Room was recognised in the Top Escape Rooms Project (https://topescaperoomsproject.com), ranking 15th internationally in the ‘Top Companies’ category.
In their spare time Marise is an avid gamer and writer, whilst David is a specialist veterinarian.
